What is Meshtastic?

Meshtastic is an open-source, long-range off-grid communication platform that uses inexpensive LoRa radios to create a mesh network for sending text messages.

It allows users to communicate without relying on traditional infrastructure like cell towers or internet, making it suitable for situations like disaster recovery or in remote areas.

But why?

First: It’s interesting and a new thing to tinker with and keep my brain busy.

Second: There has been a lot of situations in the world lately where communication might get disrupted. There is a really close war going on, a long lasting power outage happened in parts of Europe and we all seem to be relying way too much on existing centralized infrastructure.

I am not a prepper who wants to be prepared for every possible scenario, but it does not hurt to at least have a look at alternative communication methods.

Plus I have ideas for how to use it to send telemetry data from remote areas - for example sensor data from beehives.
